If You Can’t Move Up In Your Career, Move Sideways!

Are you stuck up on the company, with the next promotion or level of position out of reach now or maybe in the next year and the next?

You are not alone. I know many people who find themselves stuck on the career ladder of success.businesspeople

So, instead of looking up for advancement, look sideways. Yes, sideways — either in the same company or in another job. This is to improve your chances of promotion or get satisfaction out of what you do.

This career strategy is called a lateral switch, where you move sideways instead of moving up. You cannot move up either because of office politics, favoritism, or other factors. It could also be that you still lack the necessary skills and knowledge required for the next higher job.

To experience career enrichment and prevent burn-out, do a lateral switch. You do it by considering the following:

1. If your objective is a fast promotion, search for a company in turmoil — one where a merger is pending or a new business operation is slated-because change equals opportunities.

2. You look for a job within your industry. Instead of learning a new job, skills or knowledge and the tricks of the new trade, you can spend your time learning to get along with people in your new company.

3. If your primary purpose is to add to your experience, be daring. Try joining associations or clubs related to your industry or network with other similar groups or professions. It will add clout to your resume.

4. When you make your move, don’t leave waves. You may want to go back to your former employer someday. If you’re lucky, your old company will view what you gained from the move as a gain for it, too, and you will be considered an asset to the organization.

Therefore, if you cannot move up, don’t be stuck up to your present position for years and burn-out from the job. Move sideways. Do a lateral switch today.

  1. Very nice advice. Makes sense. Thanks for posting.

  2. I appreciate your article today. This got me thinking about my own employment in a water utility company. It seems I have already reach the dead end of promotion, or stuck up in my position for the last 5 years. Maybe I’ll do a lateral switch, as you advice, if I am not yet promoted next year.

  3. What if I wanna do this lateral switch but my boss just don’t wanna give me to the other manager from a different department who is asking for me for 2 weeks now? Geesh!

  4. This post taps on resourcefulness and it’s a nice and helpful post. Many people miss that and are left clueless as to how they can advance.
