A Most Colorful Tradition
The Chinese has one of the world’s most colorful and unique traditions and one of their biggest celebrations is the Chinese New Year, which coincides with Valentine’s Day this year. According to Chinese astrology, this year 2010 is the year of the metal White Tiger.
As with any Chinese celebrations in the past in the city and elsewhere throughout the world, this year’s affair has fireworks display and firecrackers nightly, to greet the coming of the new year.
Of Fireworks and Firecrakers
According to my Chinese businessmen friends who all wear red costumes last night, the reason why there are always fireworks and firecrackers in their celebration is to generate noise, to drive away evil spirits.
Why the famous Dragon and Lion Dance?
Last night there was also dragon and lion dance in the main street. When I asked my Chinese friends what’s the reason for the dragon and lion dance, they gave me a brief and concise explanation:
In the Chinese culture, dragon is the deity of water ensuring that no drought will come. On the other hand, the lion helps ward off evil spirits as it symbolizes power and courage.
Predictions in the Year of the Tiger
What’s in store for us in this year of the metal White Tiger? Well, if you do good, this is the year where you can fulfill your cherished plans and dreams, as the year promises to be interesting in all aspects.
In my study of the fascinating Chinese astrology, here’s my predictions of what the Year of the white Tiger will bring us.
