Life’s Little Instruction On Living A Happy Life

While rearranging my files, I’ve found a little book which I’ve purchased ten years ago. I took a break and re-read it once more. It’s titled “Life’s Little Instruction Book” written by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

The book was a bestseller some years ago. It’s full of suggestions, observations, and reminders on how to live a happy and rewarding life.

I thought Brown’s suggestions are good, so I’d like to share with you some of these “life’s little instruction.”

1. Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.

2. Be brave. Even if you’re not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference.

3. Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures.

4. Overtip breakfast waitresses.

5. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.

6. Never resist a generous impulse.

7. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.

8. Never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink.

9. Leave everything a little better than you found it.

10. Call your mother.

11. Leave beneath your means.

12. Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated.

13.Stop blaming others. Take responsibility for every area of your life.

14.Make the best of bad situations.

15. Demand excellence and be willing to pay for it.

16. Don’t take good health for granted.

17. Avoid sarcastic remarks.

18. In business and in family relationships, remember that the most important thing is trust.

19.Choose your life’s mate carefully. From this one decision will come ninety percent of all your happiness or misery.

20. Smile a lot. It costs nothing and is beyond price.

Indeed, once in a while, it is nice to take a break, ponder our priorities and examine our life’s meaning. As the wise philosopher Socrates said: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

  1. Brilliant!
These “little” instructions of life by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. are most essential in our day to day living. Applying these principles will surely make your life better.

Thanks for sharing this! I no longer need to buy the book! Hehehe!

  2. I agree with almost everything on the list – except 17 and 8 –

    #17 – sarcasm is all I know

#8 – The person who wrote this list obviously was not a mom with a bunch of kids who eat all day long.

  3. I love it – i try to instill all of this in my daily life and do believe that attitude is a state of mind that you determine. I have learned that being positive is encouraging and contagious.
I want to share my favorite quote ” Life is like a horse on a loose rein, it can either walk calmly ahead or take off unpredictably”. It is HOW you act to life that creates the REACTION of your life course (with lots of exciting unpredictable-ness along the way)

  4. Well, that’s life! This post is very timely… it’s true that we really have to find time to assess ourselves of what we think, say or do. It’s nice that you saw the book again. Thanks!:=)

  5. Great post!
    Great list!

Okay as of today, I’m going to try, really try, to fulfill number 8.

The only other one I may struggle with occasionally is number 17.

All others I got covered. This may be why I am The Happiest Person I Know!

    LIve Life Happy!

  6. That is certainly a great list. And they are all so true if we can just remember them. I am tempted to print them and keep them in front of me. I do know that thinking positively is wonderful for your happiness. The more negative you are, the more unhappy you will be. Have a great day.

  7. I was intrigued with number 8 and asked myself.. “Why?!” But I’ll try this one. Maybe it’ll bring goodluck. Who knows..

“Never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink.”

  8. Thanks for the reminder, Atty!

The daily rush sometimes take its toll on us that we tend to forget how we should live happily. I have learned from my mistakes. No. 16 shouldn’t be relegated to the sidelines. Indeed, “Health is wealth!”

  9. Some good advice, Eli. I was amused by “Overtip breakfast waitresses.” I’ll have to remember that one. And then your ending quote by Socrates made me think even more, and I don’t try to think that often.
