That is why I have been saying all along that one best way for bloggers to make their sites stand out from the millions other blogs is to promote their blogs, to make it known to the world and be competitive. And how to make their blogs known to their target readers and visitors? Of course, by advertising.

CMF Ads and Adgitize are Good Networks to promote Blogs

I have found two good advertising networks to promote blogs — CMF Ads and Adgitize. I have been advertising on these two ad networks since May 2009, the time when I started to blog primarily as a hobby and for self-expression.

I also used Entrecard in the past, but I was not satisfied of the untargeted traffic it brings and the 1-2 hours dropping cards daily which I could spend to write quality content. Even then, when I was in Entrecard, my blog was on the Top 2 of the most popular blogs in all categories composed of 40,000 blogs, receiving an average of 400 droppers a day.

Talking about Adgitize, it has started its affiliate promotion for this month of October 2010.

I have already explained the value of advertising and promotion for blogs, or why bloggers must promote their blogs thru advertising. But why in the Adgitize, for example?

After all, what is the use of publishing content without readers? A reader is to a blog as water is to a plant. Each is useless without the other.

For the past month I tried advertising my blog in Entrecard’s Sponsor Ads, CMF Network Ad, and Adgitize. The three are the popular and major ad networks in blog advertising. How do they refer visitors to bloggers-advertisers? Which is the most effective ad firm among and between the three?

My Experiment

I purchased a 31-day network ad in the Adgitize from August 1 to  August 31,  2010 for $ 14.00. My ad runs on about 5,000 Adgitize publisher-member blogs on random rotation 24/7 for 31 days.

I also bought a 30-day network ad in CMF Ads for the same period for $ 10.00. My ad runs on about 800 publisher blogs, also on random rotation 24/7 for 30 days.

At the same time, I purchased a full network ad (Sponsor Ad) from Entrecard for $ 10.00 on August 19, 2010 and it ended on August 30, 2010, upon reaching 40,000 impressions or views on EC’s 40,000 user blogs, also on random rotation.

Traffic, Page Views and Clicks

After the expiration of my adverts on Adgitize, Entrecard and CMF Ads, the following are the statistics provided by the three ad networks:

1). Adgitize: 1541 clicks         $ 0.009 cost per click              —-

2) Entrecard: 197 clicks          $ 0.04 cost per click       40,169 impressions or page views

3) CMF Ads: 434 clicks          $ 0. 02 cost per click      331,971 impressions or page views

Google Analytics Stats

However, my Google Analytics stats for the period August 1 – August 31, 2010 has different report, as follows:

Top Traffic Sources:

Could there be clicks or visitors that Google could not track but, however, Adgitize, Entrecard and CMF Ads were able to record? Even then, it is not disputed that my respective advert in the three ad networks has brought visitors to my blog.

Value of Advertising

To my mind, the value of putting advertising in Adgitize, Entrecard and CMF Ads is blog promotion and branding. In the face of countless millions blogs in the blogosphere, advertising aims to promote your blog and make it stands out from the rest, and enabling your avatar or ad image recognizable.

In addition, advertising brings in readers, as proven by the stats from the 3 ad networks.

Which of the 3 Ad Networks is Best?

It depends on your objective in advertising. Adgitize, Entrecard and CMF Ads have their own respective strengths and weaknesses. In my case, I can say, based on the results, that Adgitize is best, followed by CMF Ads, then Entrecard, in that order. This is from the yardstick of cost-effectiveness, cost per click, per thousand impressions or page views and in generating visitors.

I have been consistently advertising monthly on both the CMF Ads and Adgitize  for more than a year already and the results are good, in terms of promoting my blog and in bringing in readers and traffic.

After all, readers are a must for a blog to survive, in the same way that a plant needs water to continue growing.

Talking of Adgitize, last June 4, 2010, it rolls out the phase 2 of its summer promotion. It aims to reward advertisers and clickers scoring over 200 points a day. Any day a publisher-advertiser scores 100 click points and 100 advertiser points and score over 200 points then that member earns a minimum of 34 cents a day.

As such, an active member-blogger who advertises in the Adgitize, updates his/her blog daily, and visits 50 blogs a day can earn 47 cents a day, or a total of more than $ 14.00 a month, which is the cost of a 31-day ad in the Adgitize. It is like having a money back advertising campaign.

Adgitize founder and admin Ken Brown explains that members that score over 200 points in a day and have 100 click points on that day will earn a minimum of 15 cents a day.

On the other hand, a member earns 20 cents minimum a day if he/she scores 100 advertiser points in a single day and his/her total points exceed 200 points that day.

Ken said that a member will see this on his/her earnings report beginning on June 3rd, 2010.

Adgitize’s 2^nd summer promotion bonus will be guaranteed through July 31st, 2010.

Adgitize is rewarding advertisers and clickers this summer,  said Ken, to help members earn more money.

I think this is a way for an active member to get back his/her advertising expenses, with daily traffic and blog promotion as bonus.

What is blog promotion? It is the process for the purpose of creating awareness in your target readers about your blog and gain maximum exposure for it.

Why blog promotion? The reason is to generate visitors or traffic to your blog. Another reason is to brand your blog, making it stands out from the countless other blogs in the blogosphere.

Having already understand the value of blog promotion, what are the venue by which promotion can be done? These are as follows:

1. Advertising

This includes joining in such popular ad networks and buying adverts therein, such as CMF Ads, Adgitize, Entrecard and Project Wonderful, to mention some of the well-known ad networks for bloggers.

Of course, putting adverts on these networks costs money. There is no such thing as something for nothing. You have to pay to make your blog known to the blogosphere.

2. Search engines

This concerns the submission of your blog to search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN Bing.

As I have already discussed in my previous posts, search engines especially the Big Three mentioned above, are the only constant and steady source of traffic to your blog and it is free.

The key to search engines promotion to generate traffic to your blog is to get high search engines ranking, specifically getting on page one on search engine results page (SERP).

3. Article Directories

This involves submitting your original and high quality content articles to articles directories such as Ezines Articles.com, Bukisa, and Associated Content.

Once your articles are published you will get free exposure. In addition, your content get indexed by search engines, resulting to your article and blog appearing in search engine results page every time people search on topics related to your article based on keywords.

4. Forums and Commenting on other Blogs

This involves joining the discussion forums related to blogging and/or your blog niche and posting comments therein, with your blog URL.

Commenting on other blogs’ posts also uses the same method, posting your responsive (not spam) comments that enhance the posts on some related blogs and leaving your signature and URL.

There are other forms of blog promotion, such as link exchange, viral marketing, e-mail marketing, joining social networking sites, etc.

However I have found out, based on personal experience, that the four methods I’ve outlined above are effective in promoting your blog and generating traffic as a result.

When you choose which ad network you must use to promote your blog, it is important to know that the effectiveness of the  network in relation to your ad can be measured by the following three (3) criteria:

1. Price

2. Reliability, e.g. your ad runs smoothly and without interruption 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, until it is completed

3. Customer service

To advertise my blog I’ve been using Project Wonderful, CMF Ads, Adgitize and, until 3 days ago, Entrecard.

However, based on various surveys, among the popular advertising networks for bloggers these days are Adgitize and CMF Ads, or CMF Ads and Adgitize, in any order.

The two above-named networks are popular because of their price, reliability and customer service, as I’ve also found out, as follows.

1. Price

CMF Ads. A network ad costs $ 10.00 in CMF Ads, and is good for 30 days.  It runs on 669 publisher blogs, assuming all publishers approve your ad. CMF Ads has comprehensive stats on cost per thousand views or impressions (CPM), cost per click (CPC), no. of clicks, and page views.

Aside from its network ad, CMF Ads has also campaign ads where an advertiser can choose to put adverts on any publisher blogs, starting from $ 0.01 for one month.

Adgitize. A network ad in the Adgitize costs $ 14.00 for 31 days and runs on thousands of publisher blogs on a random rotation, assuming publishers don’t reject your ad. Adgitize provides stats on ad views and daily click stats.

2. Reliability

Adgitize. Just recently, Adgitze web server and ad servers experienced meltdown for three (3) days from January 24-26, 2010. As a result, all of the ads of the advertisers did not run on those days.

CMF Ads. CMF Ads was designed to handle much more traffic than it currently receives. Aside from the code performing well, the site runs on a specially-configured dedicated server that is routinely updated.

CMF Ads takes its service very seriously and its operating philosophy is based on prevention (identifying and addressing potential issues before they bring the site down), rather than cure (having to credit people for downtime).

As a result, since it started operations on October 2008 it has not experienced any server meltdown.

3.Customer Service

Customer service is a must for any business that deals with clients. Both Adgitize and CMF Ads have excellent customer service – one that deals with routine inquiries and complaints from or disputes with customers.

CMF Ads. It has a superb customer service, as queries, complaints, reports from members are answered as soon as possible, sometimes within an hour.

Adgitize. Adgitize has excellent customer service.  For example, after its servers meltdown was resolved, Adgitize has compensated all advertisers for ads that were not showing on its network for 3 days, by adding 7 days to the ad expiration dates to all active ads in the system.

Adgitize Admin Ken Brown even apologized personally to all members for the server problems.

Conclusion

Customer service is the core in any business, for the reason that the customer is king.

As the famous management thinker Peter F. Drucker, the guru of management said: “Quality in a service or product is not what you put into it. It is what the client or customer gets out of it.”

That blogger also applied to be a publisher in CMF Ads and his application was approved in no time at all, as he posted on its Forums.

My Own Experience with Entrecard and CMF Ads

Reading the post of that blogger made me recall my own experiences with Entrecard and CMF Ads a few months back.

When I applied as a member (user) of Entrecard it took five (5) days for my blog to be approved.

With CMF Ads my blog was accepted in just four (4) hours.

The Customers Are Kings and Queens

As a business and management consultant I always advice my clients who are business men and women to put their customers as their first priority, and be close to the clients.

I would tell them that customers are their businesses’ reason for existence. Indeed, the heart of business is the customers. Others would even say that a customer is king or queen.

The Two Lessons In Customers Satisfaction That I Learned

My personal experience as a member of Entrecard and CMF Ads have enhanced my learning in customers satisfaction which is very important to any business.

I recognize the fact, as many others do, that in business your success and profit depend on the sales of your products or services. In turn, sales of products and services are dependent on your customers and their needs and wants, and not on what you want.

Here’s the two important lessons that I’ve learned in Entrecard and CMF Ads.

1. Be close and Listen to the Customers

Since a business exists to provide goods and services to the customers to meet their needs and wants, it is important for a business to be close to the customers. What do the customers need? What are their feedback?

How can a company improve customer relations to expand its market base and thus generate more sales revenue and profit?

I’ve found out that CMF Ads admins are very close to the members who are publishers and advertisers. Problems and concerns are addressed within 10 hours, or even in an hour.

For example, when I bought a network ads three (days) ago, my ad was approved, up and running within two (2) hours!

In Entrecard the owner seems not to listen to its member-users. EC Admin closed the Forum and comments to its blog are disabled. There is no interaction at all between the management and the users.

For instance, when I purchased a Sponsor Ads last month, my application was approved in four (4) days.

2. Solicit Feedback and Consult Your Customers

In Entrecard the users, whom its Admins call as the strength of the Entrecard network, are at the receiving end of the Admins policy changes since their inputs and recommendations are not welcome.

In CMF Ads, proposed policy changes are discussed and the members inputs are solicited. And all members are encouraged to be active in the Forums where the issues and queries of the members are answered right away.

Indeed, if you are not close to the customers and don’t listen to their concerns, how do you know what your customers want? You will just drive them away, as evidenced by the many users who have left Entrecard.

Conclusion

Any business is a service business. Service is part of every contact between your business and a prospect or customer. Ultimately, it affects not only how purchasers feel about your business but also their perception of the value and quality of the product or service you deliver.

Therefore, to be successful in business – in any business for that matter, what is important is you are close to the customers, for they are the people who give you your revenue and profit which are vital to your survival and growth.

Since I have already stopped using CMF Ads as an advertiser just two weeks ago, I can now share my own experience dispassionately and in an impartial manner.

For the last five months since June until the first week of December 2009 I have been a constant advertiser on the many CMF publisher blogs, with 60-100 ads running at any given time. I was spending an average of $ 20.00 monthly for my CMF Ads advertising.

I am not an internet marketer, have no products to sell online; am just a blogger who believe in advertising and promotion to bring traffic to my blog.

Below are the highlights of my ad campaigns experience in CMF Ads for the last five months.

1. Ad Price per Month and Blog Categories

When I purchase ads on CMF Ads, I always choose the blogs with ad prices ranging from $ 0.10 / month minimum to $ 1.25/ month  maximum. I did not buy ads from blogs with ad prices of less than $ 0.10 / month nor more than $ 1.25 / month.

Every time I buy ads, I select the blogs with niche in the business, finance, internet marketing, making money online and even in blogging.

2.  Low Traffic, Some Zero Clicks

My stats for the last five months show that my adverts on CMF publisher blogs were not effective in generating extra traffic to my blog. In some blogs, I got zero clicks during the 30 days when my ads were running.

The highest clicks that I got were 10, but that is few and far between. On the average, I got only 0-2 clicks for one month for all my ads.

Again, at any given time, I had a total of 60-100 ads running on many publishers’ blogs.

3. Traffic Stats and CMF Ads referrals

My Google Analytics stats reveal that of my blog’s traffic sources, CMF Ads contributes only 177 visitors a month on the average.

Here’s my latest traffic sources overview from Google Analytics, from November 3 – November 27, 2009 when my CMF Ads were still running at its peak:

No point of comparison but I figured it out that the $ 20.00 that I was spending monthly on CMF Ads advertising is not effective vis-à-vis the traffic that it generates to my blog. In terms of cost-benefit analysis, the cost is more than the benefit.

Why My Ads on CMF Have Very Low Traffic?

I will not talk about cost per thousand impressions (CPM) or cost per click (CPC), it is enough that based on the stats from CMF Ads itself, my adverts on many publishers blogs have very low clicks or even zero clicks monthly.

There are two reasons for this:

1. Low Traffic Publisher Blogs. Many publishers’ blogs are low traffic sites, and they need blog promotion to provide more value to their advertisers. Some publishers’ blogs do not even advertise their sites.

2. CMF Ads system of ads rotation. If a blog has 10 ads running, then your ad will have 10% ad views only at any given time. Some blogs with ad prices of $ 0.05 – $ 0.10 a month have 20-25 ads. That means your ad could not get maximum exposure, only 1/20 to 1/25 ad views only.

Now CMF Ads own in-house ad found on the many publisher blogs with zero outside ads promotes: “Rock bottom prices – a 30 day ad costs as little as $ 0.01.”

True, CMF Ads’ ad space sharing reduces your advertising costs but based on my experience, it is not effective in generating traffic for the reason that it also drastically reduces your ad views.

Good for Branding, Excellent Admin Support

Still, advertising on CMF Ads has positive side. It is good for branding your blog as well as in  generating awareness to your target audience about your site.

In addition, it has very friendly Admins and you will get fast support. In case you have problems or  questions, all you have to do is create an alert and you will get answers within 5-10 hours, based on my experience.

I take particular mention of Ben Barden, one of the three CMF Ads owners, who always attend to my “alerts” by answering my concerns in a fast and efficient way, to my heart’s content.

Why I Stopped Advertising on CMF Ads?

When CMF Ads changed its system for advertisers to buy ads and place on its publishers blogs very recently, I found it a waste of my time having to create an ad campaign every time I place an ad. To me the new scheme is complicated.

That’s the time when I created an “alert”, requesting that my advertiser account be cancelled effective immediately. That was two weeks ago. I’ve read that they are still making improvements and changes to the advertising interface, to make it better.

But in my case I think it’s time to move on and try other ad networks.

     In that posts, I discussed my own experience about promoting my blog to generate traffic. This is because I have observed that many bloggers commit the mistake of doing little or nothing at all to make their blogs known to their target readers. They just hope that once they have already launched their sites, traffic will just follow as a consequence.

     That is why I have stressed in my two previous posts that a blog is a business and that being so, it requires business strategy and tactics to make it successful. I have found out that one of the proven business strategy is the advertising tactic – designed to promote your blog to your target readers.

     Over the past month, I have catalogued a great number of what I call “bloggers’ marketing mistakes”.  Although I found it difficult to believe in what they posted on their blogs and on their comments in discussion forum, here are the six most common marketing mistakes.

     1). “My blog is my marketing tool, so why should I advertise?”  At first glance, this seems to make sense. But it speaks of a total misunderstanding of the role of marketing, especially advertising and promotion, in making the blog known to the world, especially to the target audience. Since everyday there are 175,000 new blogs created, and the blogosphere is already over populated by tens of millions of blogs, how would people know that your blog exists unless your promote it?  Besides, why would they visit your blog when there are many millions blogs?

     2). “I already know who my target readers are.”  You may already know that your blog is for women, or for men’s interests, or for business, or for internet marketing or for blogging resources and what not. Fine with that. But do your target readers know your blog?

     3). “The only thing important to my blog is good quality content.” That is good. But unless you have traffic daily, your good quality posts will not get read.

     4). “Advertising is just a waste of money. I’m here to make money.” It is true that you have to spend money to advertise your blog on other blogs or in the ad network. But I know other bloggers who have tried advertising their blogs will agree with me that blog-to-blog advertising has a profound impact on traffic, especially generating absolute unique visitors daily.

     5). “Marketing is only for bloggers who have something to sell online.” Marketing, especially promotion which is a function of marketing, applies to all blogs, and not only to blogs dealing with internet marketing or with a product to sell.

     6). “SEO is more important than promotion.” I think search engine optimization is fine, so does blog promotion. Like a cart and carriage, SEO and blog promotion go hand in hand and each is useless without the other.

     As bloggers, no matter what our blogs are and what niche and business we are in, we’re engaged in marketing and promotion to sustain and expand our readership and to differentiate our blogs from the many other blogs. Otherwise, we will also commit the same mistakes many bloggers make, resulting to the untimely demise of their blogs.

     Many bloggers commit a cardinal mistake of just doing little or nothing at all to make their blogs known. They just hope that once they have already launched their sites, traffic will just follow as a matter of course.

     What many bloggers did not know is that a blog is a business and, that being so, it requires business strategy and tactics to make it successful. One of the proven business strategy is the advertising tactic – designed to promote your blog to your target readers.

     This means you must purchase an ad space or advertise in other well-known or established blogs. By this I mean blogs that have already more visitors and subscribers and high page viewers compared to your blog. By putting your ads in the popular blogs, there’s a likelihood that their many loyal readers and unique daily visitors can see and click it which will direct them to your own blog.

     Based on my experience, there are four ways to effective advertising to maximize your ads and, therefore, optimize clicks through your website to generate traffic. These are the following:

     1. Selection of the blogs where the widget is strategically located. This means when you advertise in the other blogs, you must choose a blog with a widget above the fold or at the top, either on the left or right side of the webpage.

     Do not place your ad in a blog if the widget is located down below or near the footer. Chances are, the probability that your ad will be seen by the readers is slim, as people will have to scroll down all the content before they find your ad. This is a waste of money, unless you have a lot of money to waste in such kind of low impact advertising.

     2. Better and attractive ad design. It is best to have a graphical ad. Make it attractive and eye-catching so that the readers will be curious to click it. Your ad is your blog’s brand or image. It makes a statement about you, and tell the readers what it is all about.

     So, if your blog is about internet marketing, do not use an ad image representing a crocodile, as some bloggers do. Or if you are in a lifestyle category, your ad image must reflect something that connotes or evokes a picture of a lifestyle that you want to communicate and share to your readers, and not an image of a lizard or a lion, like the ads of some bloggers.

     If you are not getting good results (click to your blog) from your ad, then you have to change it after a week’s time of daily monitoring. Google Analytics and Alexa are two of the best traffic monitors.. Some ad designs just don’t perform. It is better to have at least 3 ads and learn which one works best for you.

     3. Use a proven ad size. An ad size with a 125×125 pixels is the industry standard, the kind that the Adgitize Ad Network, Entrecard, CMF and Project Wonderful use. You can also make a banner type, or even a size bigger or even smaller than the 125×125, but then you will have difficulty finding an ad companies within which to advertise.

     Promoting your blog is not the same as publishing a good quality content and updating it regularly. But unless your blog has daily traffic, all your good quality posts are nothing. It is only by generating traffic to your blog by maximizing your ads in other blogs that will make your readers appreciate your good content, making them your loyal visitors and subscribers.
