1. If your objective is a fast promotion, search for a company in turmoil — one where a merger is pending or a new business operation is slated-because change equals opportunities.

2. You look for a job within your industry. Instead of learning a new job, skills or knowledge and the tricks of the new trade, you can spend your time learning to get along with people in your new company.

3. If your primary purpose is to add to your experience, be daring. Try joining associations or clubs related to your industry or network with other similar groups or professions. It will add clout to your resume.

4. When you make your move, don’t leave waves. You may want to go back to your former employer someday. If you’re lucky, your old company will view what you gained from the move as a gain for it, too, and you will be considered an asset to the organization.
