Early on we had someone badmouth CMF Ads because I had changed all their comments on my blog to nofollow, after I caught them stealing content from one of my articles. They then wrote a misleading article and used negative words in the title. Despite being on a no-name blog with no readers, comments, or backlinks, Google seemed to love that article. It would stay #3 in search results no matter how many positive articles were written. Google foolishly does this on purpose to create balanced search results. SEO hacks are well aware of this, and exploit it. You can write about any topic, create a title like “Is Eli’s Business Sphere a Scam?”, and suddenly you appear at the top of the search results for “Eli’s Business Sphere ”
We tried a number of solutions, some of which you mention in your article. Encouraging positive reviews, addressing the issues even if they were complete lies, even writing Google itself. In the end that negative article can’t even be found if the first 10 pages of search resuslt today, after being so “important” that it was #3 for over a year. Removing negative publicity takes time. Just remember, most people won’t google your blog’s name. Ranking for “business” and “advice” is much more important than ranking for “Eli’s Business Sphere ” The damage from a negative article has is less than you think.
